Fire in Attibele-Bengaluru: 13 Dead, 4 Injured in Firecracker Shop-Godown Fire
A devastating fire erupted at a firecracker shop and godown in Attibele, rural Bengaluru, near the Karnataka-Tamil Nadu border, resulting in the loss of at least 13 lives and injuries to four individuals. The incident unfolded around 3:30 pm while workers were unloading firecrackers from a transport vehicle, according to police.
Rapid Response by Fire and Emergency Services
Fire and emergency services received an urgent call at 3:33 pm, prompting a swift response from the authorities. Nine vehicles, including water tankers and water lorries, were promptly dispatched to the scene. Over 100 personnel from the fire and emergency services, as well as the police, worked tirelessly late into the night to control the raging inferno.
Tragic Toll and Ongoing Search Efforts
Approximately 20 people were present inside the godown at the time of the incident, and as of Saturday night, some remained unaccounted for. Bengaluru (rural) Superintendent of Police (SP) Mallikarjuna Baladandi confirmed the recovery of 13 charred bodies from the site, all of which have been transported to the hospital. The majority of the victims were employees working at the firecracker shop and godown. Search and identification operations are still underway.
Origin of the Tragedy and Investigation
While the exact cause of the fire is pending investigation by the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), initial suspicions point to an electric wire within the godown as the possible ignition source. Authorities are eagerly awaiting interviews with the injured for additional insights.
Government Response and Compensation
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident and announced a compensation of Rs. 5 lakh for the families of the deceased. The CM is scheduled to visit the accident site for an inspection on Sunday. Bharatiya Janata Party MP A Narayanaswamy emphasized the need to investigate how permission was granted for the storage of such a substantial quantity of firecrackers in the godown.
