Fire at Mount Bromo National Park, Indonesia Extinguished

Jakarta, August 10 [VoM News]: Indonesian authorities have extinguished a wildfire that burned approximately 550 hectares of land in Mount Bromo National Park in East Java, officials said on Monday. However, new fire hotspots have emerged near the volcano’s caldera, Reuters reported.

The fire, which began on August 3, had affected around 550 hectares by Sunday before being brought under control, according to Gatot Soebroto, head of the local disaster mitigation agency.

Authorities have since identified new fires covering about 20 hectares in areas surrounding the caldera. Officials warned that the flames could spread further due to prevailing conditions.

More than 120 emergency personnel, supported by three water-bombing helicopters, drones and fire engines, have been deployed to contain the new hotspots.

Mount Bromo, an active volcano in East Java, is one of Indonesia’s most popular tourist destinations and is renowned for its vast “Sea of Sand” caldera. The national park spans more than 50,000 hectares.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the wildfire but suspect it was triggered by human negligence.

According to officials, preliminary findings indicate that someone lit a fire and failed to fully extinguish it. Investigators reached this conclusion after identifying the initial burn site along a route commonly used by visitors.

As a precaution, all access to Mount Bromo National Park has been closed since Saturday evening.

No casualties have been reported.
