Final Draft of CAA Expected by March 2024, Says Union Minister Ajay Mishra

Union Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra announced that the final draft of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) is anticipated to be ready by March 30 next year. Addressing the Matua community in Thakurnagar, North 24 Parganas district, Mishra reassured them of their citizenship rights. He stated that the process of implementing CAA has accelerated in recent years, with certain issues being resolved. The Matuas, who migrated from Bangladesh, have been a key focus in the context of the CAA.

    CAA’s Objective and Political Reactions

The CAA aims to provide Indian citizenship to persecuted minorities such as Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan, who entered India before December 31, 2014. However, Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha MP Santanu Sen criticized the BJP, claiming that the party remembers the Matuas and the CAA only during elections. He expressed skepticism about the BJP’s ability to implement CAA in West Bengal, alleging that the party’s false claims are becoming evident to the Matuas and others.

Trinamool Congress’s Stand on Matua Rights

Countering the BJP’s promises, Sen emphasized that the Trinamool Congress has ensured the rights of the Matuas as citizens of the country. He accused the BJP of making false promises and stated that the Trinamool Congress works for the community throughout the year, unlike the BJP.
