Farmers Rail Roko Protest Gains Momentum on Day 3

In the ongoing Delhi Chalo protests, farmers are set to intensify their agitation by blocking train services today, marking the third day of the standoff between farmers and the Centre. Simultaneously, crucial talks are scheduled between three Union ministers and farmers’ leaders in Chandigarh. The protest, centered at the Haryana-Punjab borders, has garnered support from major farmers’ unions, including Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan) and BKU Dakaunda (Dhaner faction), who have declared a ‘rail roko’ in Punjab from 12 noon to 4 pm on February 15.

United Front: Farmers Unions Unite for Rail Roko

Several prominent farmers’ unions, part of the Samyukt Kisan Morcha, a coalition of 37 farm unions, have thrown their weight behind the ongoing protests. The demand for a minimum support price (MSP) for their crops remains a key sticking point. This collective protest action is a response to what they perceive as the “condemnable use of violence” against farmers, echoing sentiments from similar protests in 2021.

Rail Roko Locations Finalized, Nationwide Impact Expected

Nearly 10 protest sites have been identified for the ‘rail roko’ action, jointly participated in by BKU Ugrahan and BKU Dakaunda (Dhaner faction). These locations include Rajpura, Sunam, Jethuke village, Moga, Mansa, Malaut, Valla railway crossing, Barnala, Sangrur, and Budhlada. The disruption is anticipated to affect major rail lines like Amritsar-Jalandhar-Delhi, Mansa-Bathinda-Delhi, and Ludhiana-Ferozepur, among others.

Crucial Talks Amidst Clashes: Third Round of Dialogue

Despite the escalating tensions and clashes between protesters and security forces, three Union ministers are set to engage in the third round of talks with farmers’ leaders in Chandigarh. The stand-off at the Punjab-Haryana border has entered its third day, marked by intermittent shelling and stone-pelting. The protesters remain resolute in their demand for a fair MSP and have received expressions of solidarity from various quarters.
