Exclusive Ski Trip to North Korea Draws Russian Tourists
A Russian travel agency, Vostok Intur, has reportedly sold out a four-day ski trip to North Korea, marking what appears to be the first tour of the isolated country since it closed its borders due to COVID-19. Priced at $750, the “family-friendly” trip includes visits to the Masikryong Ski Resort, Pyongyang, local monuments, museums, and temples. The tour aims to boost tourism, with around 100 people already applying to join the trip. However, industry experts caution against assuming a broader revival of North Korea’s pre-pandemic tourist trade.
Unique Ski Experience in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK)
Vostok Intur’s tour offers Russians a unique opportunity to explore the Masikryong ski resort in North Korea. The four-day trip promises a blend of active recreation on the slopes, cultural experiences, and scenic beauty. The itinerary includes a direct flight from Vladivostok, accommodation, entry tickets for excursions, and transportation, making it an exclusive adventure into the hermit kingdom.
Caution Amid Positive Signs
While the ski trip is seen as a positive sign, industry experts, including Simon Cockerell of Koryo Tours, caution against assuming a general opening of North Korea’s borders to all tourists. The tour is considered an exclusive opportunity for a limited group and may not signify a widespread revival of the country’s tourism industry, which has been dormant since January 2020.
