Key Highlights:
- Moeen Ali retires after playing 298 international matches from 2014-2024.
- The all-rounder was instrumental in England’s 2019 and 2022 World Cup victories.
- Moeen steps aside for the next generation as England rebuilds for future cycles.
Moeen Ali, who played his last game for England in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, has announced his retirement from international cricket. The 37-year-old all-rounder decided to step away from the game after realizing he was no longer in consideration for England’s future plans.
Moeen’s international career spanned a decade from 2014 to 2024, during which he represented England in 298 matches across all formats. Reflecting on his decision, Moeen explained, “I’m 37 years old and didn’t get picked for this month’s Australia series.
I’ve played a lot of cricket for England. It’s time for the next generation, which was also explained to me. It felt the time was right. I’ve done my part.”
In an interview with former England captain Nasser Hussain for the Daily Mail, as quoted by the ICC, Moeen expressed his understanding of England’s need to rebuild ahead of their upcoming white-ball assignments, including the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. “I could hold on and try to play for England again, but I know in reality I won’t.
Even retiring, I don’t feel it’s because I’m not good enough — I still feel I can play. But I get how things are, and the team needs to evolve into another cycle. It’s about being real to myself,” Moeen said.
Moeen made his debut in 2014 against West Indies and went on to score 6678 runs and take 366 wickets for England. His achievements include being a part of England’s winning squads in the 2019 Cricket World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup.
As a spinner, he took 204 Test wickets, placing him behind only Derek Underwood and Graeme Swann in England’s all-time list.
