At the Rotary Institute 2023 event in Bengaluru, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar took a scathing jab at the United Nations Security Council, likening it to an “old club” resistant to admitting new members. Mr. Jaishankar highlighted the council’s unwillingness to alter its practices or expand its membership.

Describing the Security Council as an establishment where existing members clutch onto power and are averse to reforms, Jaishankar expressed his concerns over the body’s declining efficacy due to its stagnant nature.

He emphasized the urgent need for reforms within the UN, noting the Council’s failure to adapt to global challenges. Jaishankar emphasized a growing global sentiment favoring reform within the Security Council.

Referencing the resistance to reforms in the UN structure, Jaishankar compared the reluctance of permanent members to relinquish their positions to passengers in a bus unwilling to vacate their seats for others, a reference he previously made in September.

Highlighting India’s consistent advocacy for global system reforms, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier underscored the need to align global structures with present realities, emphasizing the outdated nature of the UNSC’s permanent membership in the context of the current global landscape.
