DRDO’s Autonomous Flying Wing UAV Soars Successfully in Flight Trial

In a milestone achievement, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) conducted a triumphant flight trial of the Autonomous Flying Wing Technology Demonstrator, a homegrown high-speed flying wing UAV, at Karnataka’s Aeronautical Test Range (ATR) in Chitradurga.

The successful demonstration marks a significant leap in India’s technology prowess and places the nation among select countries mastering the controls for the Flying wing configuration.Developed by DRDO’s Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE) in Bengaluru, this indigenous unmanned aerial vehicle’s successful flight in the tailless configuration signifies India’s entry into an exclusive league of nations possessing expertise in this domain. The UAV’s journey commenced with its maiden flight in July 2022, followed by six subsequent flight trials exploring diverse developmental configurations through two in-house prototypes.

These flight trials achieved substantial milestones in refining the aerodynamic and control systems, integrating Real-Time and Hardware-in-loop Simulation, and establishing an advanced Ground Control Station. The team’s efforts culminated in the seventh and final flight, showcasing optimized avionics systems, integration, and flawless flight operations. The aircraft prototype, featuring an intricate arrowhead wing platform, is built using lightweight carbon prepreg composite material developed domestically.

This composite structure, enhanced with fibre interrogators for health monitoring, exemplifies India’s self-reliance in aerospace technology.A notable demonstration of capability was the UAV’s autonomous landing, achieved without ground radars/infrastructure/pilot assistance. The technology facilitated take-off and landing from any surveyed runway coordinates, utilizing onboard sensor data fusion and indigenous satellite-based augmentation using GAGAN receivers to enhance GPS navigation precision and integrity.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh commended DRDO, the Armed Forces, and the Industry for the successful trial, emphasizing that indigenous development of such critical technologies will bolster India’s military capabilities significantly.
