DPAP President Ghulam Nabi Azad Awaits Supreme Court’s Article 370 Verdict
Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) President Ghulam Nabi Azad expressed anticipation ahead of the Supreme Court’s impending verdict on Article 370, emphasizing the significance of the decision for the people of Kashmir.
Azad stated that the outcome of the verdict, set to be delivered by the Constitution bench on Monday, would determine whether it serves the interests of the Kashmiri people or is against their interests.
He highlighted the prolonged wait of over four years for justice, expressing faith in the Supreme Court’s judgment.
The five-judge Constitution Bench, comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Sanjiv Khanna, BR Gavai, and Surya Kant, will announce the judgment on a series of petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370 and the division of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union territories.
The petitions, filed by various entities including individuals, lawyers, activists, politicians, and political parties, contested the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, which led to the bifurcation of the region into Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
The Central government’s decision on August 5, 2019, to revoke the special status granted under Article 370 to Jammu and Kashmir and to divide the region triggered a series of legal challenges culminating in this Supreme Court case.
During the hearings spanning 16 days, the Central government defended its decision, highlighting that similar instruments of accession were used by other princely states to join India post-independence, subsuming their sovereignty into India’s.
The government justified the abrogation of Article 370, stating that the changes have curbed street violence orchestrated by terrorist and secessionist networks, asserting that peace has prevailed in the region.
As the verdict looms, the anticipation among various stakeholders in Jammu and Kashmir remains high, awaiting the Supreme Court’s pronouncement on this pivotal constitutional issue.
