Dense Fog Disrupts Flight Operations in Delhi and Beyond, Intensifies Cold in the City
Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport faced operational disruptions today as dense fog blanketed parts of the capital, reducing visibility to zero.
Passengers were advised to stay in touch with their respective airlines for updates on their flights, with Delhi Airport issuing an advisory regarding potential disruptions for flights not equipped with CAT III compliance.
The airport initiated the CAT-III Instrument Landing System to aid in precision landings during low visibility.
The mercury dropped to 9.4 degrees Celsius according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), causing visibility levels in Delhi to plummet to a mere 125 meters.
The fog also heavily impacted the National Capital Region (NCR), leading to reduced visibility across various areas.
Reports from the IMD indicated zero visibility in multiple airports across the region at 8:30 am on December 25, including Delhi-Palam, Amritsar, Agra, Gwalior, Prayagraj, and Jaisalmer.
Locals sought refuge in night shelters across the city, while others gathered around fires in areas like Lodhi Road to combat the biting cold.
Visuals from key locations such as Lodhi Road, Munirka, RK Puram, and Ring Road near AIIMS depicted a thick fog enveloping the city.
The air quality in Delhi remained in the ‘very poor’ category, registering an Air Quality Index (AQI) of around 400, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).
Flight operations in southern India were also affected, with Vistara announcing diversions and delays. Six flights from Hyderabad to Delhi were diverted, while Flight UK897 from Bangalore to Hyderabad was redirected due to adverse weather.
Air India reported at least 11 flight delays en route to Delhi due to the prevailing weather conditions.
The dense fog disrupted not only flight operations but also exacerbated the city’s cold spell, prompting residents to seek shelter in night shelters and gather around fires to fend off the chill.
