In yet another grim development, dengue has claimed the life of one more individual, raising the death toll to four in Jammu and Kashmir. Simultaneously, a surge in fresh cases has been reported, pushing the total number of dengue cases in the region this year to 3,271. Here are the latest updates on this alarming situation:

Tragic Loss of a Young Life

A 20-year-old male, Tejpal Pratap from Bihar, succumbed to dengue on October 10 while he was staying at CTM Colony Kathua. He was diagnosed with dengue fever at the Government Medical College in Kathua on October 3 and subsequently transferred to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Jammu on October 10. This marks the fourth death due to dengue in Jammu province this year and the first in Kathua district, emphasizing the severity of the situation.

Alarming Increase in Fresh Cases

Health officials reported a distressing surge in dengue cases, with 119 new cases confirmed today. Of these, 66 cases were from Jammu district, 26 from Udhampur, 11 from Kathua, 6 from Samba, 4 from Reasi, 3 from Doda, 2 from Poonch, and 1 from Ramban. The patients ranged from adults to children, totaling 98 adults and 21 children affected by this vector-borne disease.

District-wise Breakdown of Cases

The majority of dengue cases have been concentrated in Jammu district, with 2,234 reported cases. Following closely are Udhampur district with 348 cases, Kathua with 249 cases, and Samba with 218 cases. Other districts have also reported cases, such as 64 in Rajouri, 31 in Reasi, 30 in Ramban, 24 in Doda, 23 in Poonch, 4 in Kishtwar, 15 in Kashmir, and 27 from other parts of the country.

Hospitals Overwhelmed with Patients

A total of 1,094 dengue patients have been admitted to hospitals to date, with 962 patients having already been discharged. Currently, 101 patients remain under treatment, further straining the healthcare system. The situation is a growing concern, and health officials urge citizens to take proactive measures to prevent dengue’s spread.

Preventing Dengue: A Collective Responsibility

As the dengue cases continue to rise, health officials emphasize the importance of collective responsibility. Citizens are urged to ensure there is no stagnant water in and around their homes, as mosquitoes responsible for dengue breed in such conditions. Simple measures like covering water-filled utensils and tanks and regularly emptying coolers can go a long way in curbing the spread of the disease.
