Delhi Traders Anticipate Relief as Sealed Shops to Reopen Soon
In a significant development, traders in nine major markets sealed six years ago, including Amar Colony, Defense Colony, Green Park, Hauz Khas, South Ex, Greater Kailash, and Rajendra Nagar, are set to witness the reopening of their shops. Chamber of Trade and Industry Chairman, Brijesh Goyal, highlighted that after meeting with Delhi’s Mayor, Shelly Oberoi, an assurance was made to devise Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) in collaboration with MCD officials within the next five days.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) pledged to complete the necessary paperwork within a month, subsequently initiating the de-sealing process for these shops. This development follows the earlier de-sealing order issued for 392 shops in Lajpat Nagar by the Monitoring Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi ahead of Diwali and ongoing Durga Puja celebrations.
Mayor Shelly Oberoi, along with other officials, addressed a press conference at the Civic Centre, detailing the circumstances that led to the sealing of shops in Lajpat Nagar part-IV in 2018 due to norm violations. Oberoi empathized with the shopkeepers, acknowledging the adverse impact on their businesses and families due to the court’s decision, and highlighted the pending relief promised by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Oberoi elucidated the necessary steps for shop owners to have their establishments de-sealed, emphasizing requirements such as a supplemental lease deed, payment of penalties and charges, submission of a structural stability certificate, among others.
Mukesh Goyal, Leader of the House, emphasized the significance of this decision, mentioning the substantial relief granted to approximately 400 traders and 20,000 others doing business in the Lajpat Nagar Market. He urged the Monitoring Committee to consider decisions favoring traders’ interests, facilitating their business activities within Delhi and generating revenue for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi.
The commitment was made to swiftly fulfill MCD’s required formalities to expedite the de-sealing process, allowing shop owners to resume their businesses at the earliest convenience.
