Delhi schools Extends Winter Break till Jan 12 upto class 5th Amidst Severe Cold Weather
In response to the prevailing cold weather conditions in Delhi, the government has decided to extend the winter break for students from nursery to Class 5 until January 12. Delhi minister Atishi made the announcement in a post on social media, stating that schools will remain closed for the next five days due to the ongoing cold wave.
Initially, the Delhi government had issued an order yesterday extending the winter break until January 10 for government-aided and unaided recognized private schools. However, shortly after the order was released, it was retracted. The subsequent announcement by Atishi clarified the decision to extend the winter break for nursery to Class 5 students until January 12.
The decision comes as Delhi, along with parts of east and northwest Rajasthan, Haryana, and isolated pockets in Punjab, experiences extreme cold conditions. Maximum temperatures at various stations have shown a significant departure from the normal range for this time of the year. Cold to severe cold conditions are expected to persist over Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Rajasthan, with a significant decrease thereafter, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Currently, maximum temperatures range from 9-12 degrees Celsius over many parts of Punjab and Haryana, and 13-16 degrees Celsius over north Rajasthan, Delhi, northwest Madhya Pradesh, and some parts of Uttar Pradesh. These temperatures are below normal by 4-9 degrees Celsius in these areas. The IMD predicts that northwest and central India are likely to experience a fresh spell of rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and hailstorms, between Monday and Wednesday.
