Delhi-NCR Braces for Lingering Cold Wave and Dense Fog on New Year’s Eve
On the final day of the year, residents of Delhi-NCR confronted another spell of bone-chilling winter as a thick blanket of fog enveloped the national capital and its surroundings. The Safdarjung Observatory, recording the city’s primary weather data, noted a minimum temperature of 11 degrees Celsius. The dense fog significantly hampered visibility across various parts of Delhi, paralyzing vehicular movement in areas like Subroto Park, DND flyover, and India Gate.
Classifications of Fog and Weather Forecast
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) classifies fog based on visibility. ‘Very dense’ fog ranges between 0 and 50 meters, ‘dense’ between 51 and 200 meters, ‘moderate’ between 201 and 500 meters, and ‘shallow’ between 501 and 1,000 meters. The IMD has predicted dense to very dense fog in multiple areas like Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and sporadic areas in Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, and parts of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday.
Anticipated Temperature Drop and Travel Disruptions
IMD forecasts a further plunge in temperatures during the initial week of January 2024, with Safdarjung Observatory expecting readings between 10 and 7 degrees Celsius. The foggy weather led to travel disruptions on Saturday, affecting flight and train schedules in and out of Delhi. Approximately 80 flights were delayed at Delhi’s IGI Airport until 8:30 am due to the prevailing weather conditions.
As the year draws to a close, Delhi-NCR finds itself shrouded in dense fog, signaling the persistence of the severe winter and challenging travel conditions for commuters heading into the new year.
