ASSAM, MAY 29, 2026 [VoM News]: In an important move, a Delhi court issued a notice to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma after a plea seeking registration of an FIR was filed over alleged provocative remarks.
The alleged provocative remarks concerning “Miya Muslims” were made by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, following which activist Harsh Mander filed a plea seeking registration of an FIR.
Earlier, a magistrate court had refused to direct the police to register an FIR against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

While hearing a revision petition, Additional Sessions Judge Sonu Agnihotri issued a notice to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The petitioner alleged that Sarma made the remarks during a public event in Digboi in Assam’s Tinsukia district.
The remarks were allegedly related to the “removal of four to five lakh Miya voters” during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Assam.
In recent years, a significant rise in incidents of hate speech has been reported in India, while the country’s ranking on several global indices has also declined.
