Delhi Court Grants More Time to Police in Umar Khalid’s Bail Plea
The Karkardooma Court has extended the deadline for Delhi Police to respond to Umar Khalid’s bail plea in the Delhi riots conspiracy case. Khalid, in custody since September 2020, filed his second bail application seeking regular bail.
Extension and Hearing Date
Special Judge Sameer Bajpai granted Delhi Police additional time, scheduling the next hearing for March 21. Special Public Prosecutor Amit Prasad requested and received an extension, assuring that the reply would be filed by March 18.
Legal Proceedings and Previous Dismissals
Khalid’s plea is related to the broader conspiracy behind the February 2020 Delhi riots, investigated by the Special Cell of Delhi Police. He faces charges under the UAPA and IPC sections. This marks his second attempt at seeking bail after his first application was rejected by the trial court in April 2022, followed by dismissal of his appeal by the Delhi High Court.
Accused and Legal Standing
Khalid is among the accused in the case alongside others like Sharjeel Imam, Mohd. Tahir Hussain, and Natasha Narwal, among others. The court had issued a notice and requested the Delhi Police’s response in February, with subsequent hearings scheduled for arguments on bail.
