Delhi Court Extends Time for Police Response in NewsClick UAPA Case

A Delhi court has granted an extension until November 17 to the city police to respond to the bail application of Amit Chakravarty, the head of the human resources department at NewsClick. This case is related to allegations that the news portal received funds to disseminate pro-China propaganda. Special Judge Hardeep Kaur approved the extension, as requested by the police. Amit Chakravarty and NewsClick’s founder and editor-in-chief, Prabir Purkayastha, were arrested by the Special Cell of Delhi Police on October 3 and are currently in judicial custody.

Allegations of Pro-China Propaganda and Electoral Sabotage

The case alleges that a substantial amount of funds from China was funneled into the news portal to disrupt India’s sovereignty and promote disaffection against the country. The FIR also implicates Mr. Purkayastha in a conspiracy with the People’s Alliance for Democracy and Secularism (PADS) to undermine the electoral process during the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

Raids and Seizures

On October 3, raids were conducted at 88 locations in Delhi and seven in other states, targeting the individuals named in the FIR and those identified in data analysis. The operation resulted in the seizure of around 300 electronic gadgets from NewsClick’s offices and the residences of the journalists who were interrogated.

Questioning of Journalists

Following the raids, 46 individuals, including nine female journalists, were questioned by the Special Cell in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). The investigation into the allegations of pro-China propaganda and electoral interference continues.

The extension granted for the police’s response to Amit Chakravarty’s bail application indicates that the legal proceedings in this case are ongoing.
