Delhi Court Extends Custodial Remand of Accused in Parliament Security Breach Case
The Patiala House Court in Delhi has prolonged Lalit Jha’s custody for an additional 14 days in connection with the Parliament security breach incident. The Special Cell of Delhi Police presented Jha before the court following the culmination of the previous remand period granted last week by the same court. In a previous hearing, the Delhi Police informed the court that Lalit Jha disclosed details regarding multiple meetings and the execution of the conspiracy by the accused.
The police reported that Lalit Jha revealed a motive to create turmoil in the country to compel the government to fulfill their demands. Jha admitted to seizing phones from the accused to destroy evidence and conceal the larger plot, disclosing that he disposed of his phone on the route from Jaipur to Delhi. The Public Prosecutor, Akhand Pratap Singh, representing the Delhi Police, highlighted the necessity for an extensive investigation to uncover the broader conspiracy behind the meticulously planned attack. The police sought further custody to ascertain the true motive behind the incident, potential connections with foreign entities, and terrorist organizations. Additionally, they aim to facilitate confrontations among the accused.
Considering these submissions, Additional Sessions Judge Dr. Hardeep Kaur extended Lalit Jha’s custody until January 5, 2023. The security breach occurred on the anniversary of the 2001 Parliament terror attack when two individuals breached the Lok Sabha chamber, releasing gas and shouting anti-establishment slogans before being subdued. Meanwhile, two protestors staged a similar protest outside Parliament, all of whom were remanded to seven-day custody by the Delhi Police Special Cell.
Senior police officials, including Deputy Commissioners and Additional Commissioners, interrogated Lalit Jha, who revealed that preparations for the attack commenced months earlier. Jha kept a close watch on developments and police movements through news channels from a hotel in Rajasthan. Further investigations are underway, with the Delhi Police Special Cell forming six teams to probe locations associated with the accused across various states, unraveling crucial details regarding the fabrication of special shoes to carry smoke canisters into Parliament without detection.
