After a local leader of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fell victim to suspected Naxalite violence in Chhattisgarh‘s Bijapur on Friday, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai emphasized the critical nature of their ongoing battle against Naxals. CM Sai, expressing deep sorrow over the incident, declared that the plans of the extremist groups would not be allowed to succeed. The untimely demise of Tirupati Katla, the convener of BJP Cooperative Cell of Bijapur, marked a tragic event, as he was attacked while attending a wedding, ultimately succumbing to his injuries upon reaching the hospital.

According to the police account, the assailants struck Tirupati Katla during a wedding ceremony, leading to his unfortunate demise upon reaching the hospital. In a swift response, Congress state president Deepak Baij launched a scathing attack on the BJP government, asserting that Naxalite activities have surged since the recent change in leadership. Accusing Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma, Baij claimed that the Naxal movement has gained momentum, particularly during his tour with tribals from Sukma, a known stronghold of the guerillas. This criticism adds a political dimension to the complex security situation in Chhattisgarh.

The incident in Bijapur comes in the wake of a series of encounters between security forces and Naxalites in Chhattisgarh. On February 25, three Naxalites were killed in an encounter with security forces in the Kanker district. The joint operation, involving police and Border Security Force (BSF), took place in the insurgency-hit Koyalibeda forest area during an anti-naxal operation. These encounters underscore the persistent challenges faced by security forces in the region, emphasizing the need for a sustained and strategic approach to counter Naxalite activities.
