Rescue efforts are ongoing, with approximately 1,000 firefighters working on missions to save as many people as possible, stated Col. Jose Carlos Sallet, subcommander of Rio Grande do Sul Military Firefighters. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva visited the affected areas accompanied by several ministers, surveying the flooded streets from a helicopter.

The situation is dire, with Governor Eduardo Leite declaring a state of emergency, acknowledging it as the worst disaster in the state’s history. As rescue operations continue, the death toll is expected to rise further.
