Legendary English footballer David Beckham expressed his delight on his first visit to India, coinciding with the festive season and the ongoing ODI Cricket World Cup. Beckham, who witnessed the India vs. New Zealand semi-final at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, is in the country as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). His visit aligns with the International Cricket Council’s partnership with UNICEF, which aims to promote gender equality and empower women and girls through cricket.

Beckham’s Role as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador

Beckham shared his experiences as a UNICEF ambassador, recalling his journey that began when he was 17 years old with Manchester United in Thailand. Officially becoming a global ambassador in 2015, he emphasized the current focus on empowering girls. Beckham recounted his field trips and interactions in Gujarat, where he was impressed by the warmth of the people and inspired by the young innovators he met at Gujarat University.

Highlights from the Cricket World Cup Semi-Final

During his visit, Beckham enjoyed a high-scoring semi-final match where India batted first and put up a massive score of 397/4 in their 50 overs. Key performances included Rohit Sharma’s 47, Shubman Gill’s 80, Virat Kohli’s 117 — marking his 50th ODI ton, and Shreyas Iyer’s 105. KL Rahul also contributed a quick 39 runs. For New Zealand, Tim Southee took 3/100 while Trent Boult claimed 1/86.
