Cyclone Michaung Threatens Southern Odisha, Intensifies to Severe Cyclonic Storm
Cyclone Michaung, active over the Bay of Bengal, is intensifying and is expected to evolve into a severe cyclonic storm by Monday. As a precaution, five southern Odisha districts – Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam – have been put on high alert. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Warning for these regions, indicating expected rainfall of 7 to 11 cm on Monday.
Expected Path and Impact
The IMD forecasts that Cyclone Michaung will move north-northwestwards, paralleling the south Andhra Pradesh coast. It is predicted to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam, close to Bapatla, on the morning of December 5. The cyclone could bring maximum sustained wind speeds of 90-100 kmph, with gusts up to 110 kmph.
IMD’s Weather Warnings
Along with the Yellow Warning, a heavy rain advisory is in place for select areas in Odisha on December 6. The IMD also warns of squally winds along the Odisha coast, reaching speeds of 35-45 kmph, intensifying to 40-50 kmph with gusts up to 60 kmph from December 5 evening. Additionally, strong surface winds are expected in Malkangiri, Koraput, and Rayagada districts.
Advisories for Fishermen and Farmers
Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the deep sea along and off the Odisha coast from December 4-6 due to the cyclonic storm. Meanwhile, following the state government’s advice, farmers have begun harvesting mature crops to mitigate potential damage from the cyclone.
