BAMAKO, Apr 26 (VoM News): Several cities in Mali came under intense attack from unknown armed gunmen, triggering heavy explosions and gunfire on Saturday, AP reported.
Soon after the heavy gunfire, security forces moved towards the affected areas to contain the situation, according to reports.
The Malian army, in its statement, said that unidentified armed terrorist groups targeted key central locations and military barracks in the capital city. It further added that troops are presently engaging to neutralise the attackers. As of now, the situation is under control, it added.
As per the AP report, witnesses reported intense exchanges of fire near Modibo Keïta International Airport, which is located about 15 km from the city centre.
An Associated Press journalist stated that the sound of heavy gunfire could be heard, and helicopters were seen flying over nearby areas.
The United States Embassy in Mali, while issuing a security advisory, cautioned citizens to remain indoors, citing explosions and gunfire near Kati and the airport.
There were also reports of violence from central and northern regions, including Kati, Mopti, Sévaré, Kidal, and Gao. Residents described gunfire, explosions, and armed convoys moving through the streets.
In Kidal, a former local official said fighters had entered parts of the city, leading to clashes with government forces. Claims by separatist groups about controlling areas in Kidal and Gao could not be independently verified.
Security analysts suggested the attacks may be among the largest coordinated assaults in recent years, possibly involving cooperation between jihadist groups linked to al-Qaida and Tuareg separatist fighters.
In recent years, Mali has witnessed years of instability triggered by insurgencies and separatist movements, prompting military operations and support from foreign partners, with violence caused by militants and security forces also contributing to civilian casualties.
