Congress President Accuses BJP of Land Grab in Mizoram Ahead of Assembly Polls

As assembly elections loom in Mizoram, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has launched a scathing attack on the BJP, accusing them of attempting to seize land from tribals in Mizoram for their “cronies.” He further alleged that regional parties like the Mizo National Front (MNF) and Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) are effectively acting as “unofficial agents” of the BJP.

    Preserving Mizoram’s Tribal Lands

Kharge noted the historical significance of the Congress in bringing peace to Mizoram through the Peace Accord of 1986, which paved the way for statehood in 1987. He claimed that the BJP and RSS are challenging diversity and trying to appropriate the valuable land and forests owned by the tribal population for the benefit of their associates. Kharge vowed that the Congress, dedicated to the state’s advancement, would safeguard the welfare, inclusivity, and economic security of Mizoram.

    Promises of Prosperity and Inclusivity

Emphasizing the people of Mizoram’s right to peace, prosperity, and progress, Kharge assured that the Congress would fulfill its commitments. He stated, “What we promise, we deliver. Our guarantees for the state of Mizoram shall usher in welfare, inclusiveness, and economic security.”

    Mizoram’s Political Landscape

As the election date approaches on November 7, the Congress party has made pledges to safeguard the land, forests, and tribal rights of Mizoram’s people. The Mizoram National Front (MNF), rooted in the Mizo National Famine Front’s formation in 1959, emerged as a regional political party in the state. The Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), a six-party regional alliance, was formed under the leadership of MLA and former Member of Parliament, Lalduhoma.

In the 2018 polls, the Mizo National Front secured 26 seats in the 40-member Mizoram assembly, claiming victory with a vote share of 37.8 percent. The Congress won five seats, while the BJP secured one seat.
