Congress MLAs Unite Ahead of Rajya Sabha Polls in Karnataka

In a strategic move ahead of the Rajya Sabha polls, all ruling Congress MLAs in Karnataka are set to stay together at a hotel in Bengaluru after the conclusion of the budget session. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar, also the state Congress President, disclosed this plan, emphasizing the unity of the party to secure victory in the upcoming biennial election.

    Coordinated Efforts to Secure Votes

To ensure a cohesive strategy, eight party leaders, including two ministers, have been designated to coordinate with the MLAs. The collective effort aims at maximizing the party’s strength in the Rajya Sabha polls, where four vacancies from Karnataka are to be filled by elected MLAs on February 27.

    BJP-JD(S) Alliance Challenges Congress Dominance

The political landscape has intensified as the BJP-JD(S) alliance introduces its second candidate, challenging the Congress stronghold. Despite having the potential to secure only one out of the four seats, the alliance aims to disrupt the Congress’s anticipated victory. With 135 members in the 224-member Assembly, along with support from two Independents and Darshan Puttanaiah from Sarvodaya Karnataka Paksha, the ruling Congress is poised to retain three seats.

Calculating Votes and Unfolding Political Dynamics

Official sources indicate that each candidate needs 45 votes to win, assuming there are only four candidates in the fray. However, the situation becomes more complex with the possibility of additional candidates, triggering preference votes. Responding to reports of JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy discussing Rajya Sabha polls with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Shivakumar remained confident, stating, “We know what we have in our quiver, they too are aware of what we have.”

    Surprises in the Nomination Race

In a surprising turn of events, JD(S) leader D Kupendra Reddy has filed a nomination, setting the stage for a contested election. The Congress has put forward Ajay Maken, Syed Naseer Hussain, and G C Chandrasekhar as candidates, while the BJP has nominated former MLC Narayansa Bandage. The election is necessitated to fill four Rajya Sabha seats left vacant due to the retirement of Union Minister Rajeev Chandrashekar from BJP and Congress members Chandrashekar, L Hanumanthaiah, and Hussein, on April 2, after the expiry of their six-year term.
