Concerns Over Spread of Zombie Deer Disease in Canada

Scientists in Canada are expressing concerns about the spread of chronic wasting disease, also known as “zombie deer disease,” and fear it could potentially infect humans.

The contagious neurological condition is rapidly spreading in the deer population across the US.

The Canadian province of British Columbia has implemented a strategy to combat its spread after confirming two cases at the end of January. Chronic wasting disease is caused by misfolded proteins known as prions, which travel through the central nervous system, leaving deposits in brain tissues and organs.

While there is no direct evidence of human transmission, some experts suggest it could happen based on research in experimental models.
