CJI Chandrachud Illuminates Legacy of Justice ES Venkataramiah
Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud shed light on the exemplary career of the 19th CJI, Justice ES Venkataramiah, emphasizing his profound love for teaching law during the Justice ES Venkataramiah centennial memorial lecture at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru.
Justice Venkataramiah, who served as the 19th Chief Justice of India from June 19, 1989, until his retirement on December 17, 1989, commenced his legal journey as a lawyer in Bengaluru, later ascending to the bench of the Karnataka High Court and eventually becoming the country’s Chief Justice.
CJI Chandrachud highlighted Justice Venkataramiah’s significant contributions as an academic and teacher before his legal and judicial pursuits. He underscored how teaching law was Justice Venkataramiah’s paramount passion, evident in his substantial academic contributions. This fervor for teaching resonated throughout his tenure, reflecting in landmark judgments on various subjects like human rights, freedom of the press, and federalism.
Additionally, CJI Chandrachud offered insights into the camaraderie among judges in the Supreme Court during the 1980s, reminiscing about the affectionate nicknames given to esteemed judges. While revealing one nickname as “Lord Wilberfoss,” he withheld the identity of another judge referred to as “Swamiji” due to his profound expertise in Sanskrit and spirituality.
