CISF Takes Charge of Security at ICMR-NIV, Pune
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has assumed responsibility for the security of the Indian Council of Medical Research, National Institute of Virology (ICMR-NIV) in Pune, Maharashtra. Effective from Thursday, this unit, led by an inspector rank officer, will ensure round-the-clock armed security cover for ICMR-NIV. With this addition, the total units under CISF security cover now stand at 358.
ICMR-NIV is a crucial virology research institute under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), focusing on research related to animal and human infections, as well as the role of the environment. The institute played a pivotal role in combating the COVID-19 pandemic and was instrumental in the development of Covaxin.
Given the heightened threat perception to biotechnology entities across the nation, ICMR-NIV is considered susceptible to potential threats from anti-nationals and saboteurs. The deployment of CISF is a strategic move to enhance security and safeguard the vital research activities conducted by the institute.
