In a new report released by UNICEF YuWaah and iDreamCareer, career guidance access among Indian students is notably limited. The Bharat Career Aspiration Report 2024 (BCAR) highlights significant disparities in career-related information and counseling services available to students from low-income backgrounds.

Conducted over five months from August to December 2023, the survey encompassed 4,968 students from classes 9-12 across 25 states.

The report reveals that fewer than 10% of the surveyed students, specifically 465 out of 4,968, had previously utilized or were aware of career guidance services.

The study differentiated career awareness into basic and advanced levels, finding that boys generally had better access to career-related information as they advanced in their education.

In terms of career interests, the report noted that out of the 4,968 respondents, 2,999 students expressed a preference for professional careers, while 704 favored vocational careers.

Gender-wise, 62.42% of female students opted for professional careers, with a notable interest in medical science and teaching. In contrast, male students showed a preference for engineering and technology.

For vocational careers, female students predominantly chose beauty and wellness, defense, security, and sports, whereas male students preferred defense, security, sports, and business operations.

Family members (30%) and school teachers (13%) emerged as the primary influencers in students’ career choices.

The report also highlighted government and defense services as the most popular career clusters among both genders. Female students showed considerable interest in medical science and teaching, while male students favored engineering and technology.

The Bharat Career Aspiration Report 2024 underscores the need for improved career guidance and counseling services, particularly for female students and those from low-income families, to ensure equitable access to career-related information and opportunities.
