In a significant development, the Calcutta High Court has imposed a penalty of Rs 50 lakh on the West Bengal government for failing to comply with its order to transfer the investigation of alleged irregularities in a women’s cooperative society from the CID to the CBI and ED. Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay had issued the directive on August 24, instructing the transfer of the probe to these central agencies and the handover of all related documents.

    Cooperative Society Allegations

The case in question revolves around a women’s cooperative society in Alipurduar district, northern West Bengal, which ceased operations in 2020 amid allegations of a Rs 50 crore defalcation, leaving depositors without access to their funds.

    Court’s Stipulations

The Calcutta High Court has directed the state government to submit the penalty amount of Rs 50 lakh to the registrar general of the high court within two weeks. Additionally, the court has given a three-day window for the transfer of documents to the central agencies, after which they are expected to initiate the investigation promptly.

The decision to transfer the case to the CBI and ED stems from concerns about the CID investigation, which had spanned three years without resolving the whereabouts of the deposited funds.

This development underscores the judiciary’s commitment to ensuring a thorough and impartial investigation into alleged irregularities.
