He mentioned that the legislative committees of both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha are actively working on the Act, with deadlines set for January 9 next year and March 30, 2024, respectively. The Minister’s statement comes amidst various petitions filed against the Act by opposition parties.

    Details on CAA’s Legislative Journey

The CAA, passed in Lok Sabha on December 9, 2019, and in Rajya Sabha on December 11, 2019, officially became an Act on December 12, 2019, and was enforced from January 10, 2020. Mishra Teni highlighted the process involved in framing the necessary laws and regulations after an Act is passed, emphasizing the ongoing efforts for the CAA’s implementation. He assured that the government is committed to upholding the Act, asserting that it will definitely be implemented within the set timelines.

Objective of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act

The Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019, aims to facilitate citizenship for migrants from Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, or Christian communities who arrived from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan before December 31, 2014. The Act is seen as a significant move to support migrants who have faced religious persecution in their home countries.
