BJP’s Sweeping Victory in Chandigarh Mayoral Polls Sparks Allegations of Cheating
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann raised serious allegations of “cheating” in the Chandigarh mayoral polls as the BJP secured a comprehensive victory, claiming all three posts, including that of the mayor. Mann expressed concerns about the integrity of the electoral process and declared the day as a “Black Day for our country’s democracy.” The BJP candidate, Manoj Sonkar, clinched the mayoral position with 16 votes against the AAP’s Kuldeep Kumar, who secured 12 votes, with eight ballots deemed invalid.
Protests Erupt as INDIA Bloc Loses Ground
Protests erupted in Chandigarh as councillors from the INDIA bloc, comprising AAP and Congress, contested the results, alleging foul play. Bhagwant Mann accused the presiding officer, Anil Masih, of manipulating ballot papers during the counting process, leading to the invalidation of votes that tilted the balance in favor of the BJP candidate. Mann claimed that the irregularities were captured in the video recording of the event.
Serious Accusations Against Presiding Officer
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann demanded the registration of a “deshdroh” (treason) case against Anil Masih, asserting that the presiding officer, associated with BJP’s minority wing, had “murdered democracy.” Mann pointed out the absence of AAP and Congress agents during the polling process and raised concerns about the impartiality of the presiding officer.
The controversy surrounding the mayoral polls in Chandigarh adds a contentious layer to the political landscape, with serious allegations of electoral malpractice marring the outcome.
