Five years after losing her father and uncle in a terror attack, Shagun Parihar emerged victorious in the Kishtwar Assembly seat, defeating veteran National Conference (NC) leader Sajad Ahmed Kitchloo.
In a closely contested election, Parihar secured 29,053 votes, defeating Kitchloo by a narrow margin of 521 votes. Kitchloo, a former minister, received 28,532 votes, while PDP’s Firdos Ahmed Tak managed only 997 votes.
Shagun Parihar is one of 27 BJP candidates who won in the Jammu and Kashmir elections. She is among the three women elected, along with former NC minister Sakeena Masood and Shamima Firdous.
Expressing her gratitude to the people of Kishtwar, Parihar emphasized her commitment to ensuring security in the region, which has historically faced challenges. “My message to the people is to strive for peace, progress, and prosperity in the region,” she said.
Parihar, a 29-year-old Master of Technology degree holder in Electronics and currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy, was not actively involved in politics before this election. Her candidacy was significant, as she stood for families who have sacrificed in the fight against terrorism.
BJP supporters celebrated her win with traditional drum beats and slogans of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai.’ She also highlighted the importance of addressing unemployment in the region, aiming to create opportunities for educated youth.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah had actively campaigned for her, acknowledging her dedication to the cause of martyrs’ families.
