BJP Reacts Strongly to Karnataka Government’s Decision on Hijab Ban
The BJP strongly criticized the Karnataka government’s move to revoke the ban on wearing hijab in educational institutions, accusing the ruling Congress of perpetuating a ‘divide and rule’ policy reminiscent of British colonial tactics.
The party expressed concerns about the impact on the secular nature of educational spaces due to this decision.
Vijayendra, the BJP’s Karnataka chief, condemned Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s decision to lift the hijab ban, citing it as a disruption to the state’s educational environment.
He accused the Chief Minister of indulging in ‘dirty politics’ and criticized the move as harmful to the academic atmosphere, stating that it would divide young minds along religious lines.
Highlighting alleged instances of discrimination against Hindu women in contrast to the lifting of the hijab ban, Vijayendra accused the Congress of engaging in appeasement politics, particularly in light of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
He emphasized that despite years of independence, the literacy and employment rates among minorities remained low, accusing the Congress of not taking substantial steps to improve their condition.
The BJP state chief underscored the need to prioritize education over divisive practices, advocating for an inclusive learning environment free from religious influences.
He expressed concerns about the secular nature of educational spaces, suggesting that allowing religious attire in institutions could hinder an environment conducive to inclusive learning.
It’s noteworthy that the ban on wearing hijab in educational institutions was initially imposed in 2022 during the previous BJP government’s tenure in Karnataka.
