In Chhattisgarh, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has filed a complaint with the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in Raipur, claiming that 83 Congress candidates have not provided their criminal record details to the Election Commission within the required 48-hour period. The complaint is based on a Supreme Court order, which mandates that political parties must submit the criminal antecedents of candidates to the Election Commission within 48 hours of their selection. The BJP alleges that the Congress has not complied with this order.

The Congress, on the other hand, has denied the allegations, stating that they have not given tickets to individuals with “criminal tendencies” and that they will meet the criteria established by the Election Commission. Voting in Chhattisgarh is scheduled to take place in two phases on November 7 and 17, and the issue of criminal records of candidates has become a point of contention between the two major parties.
The outcome of this complaint will depend on whether the Congress can provide evidence of their candidates’ clean records and whether the Election Commission takes further action based on the BJP’s allegations.
The incident underscores the importance of transparency and adherence to electoral rules, especially concerning the criminal records of candidates. The upcoming elections in Chhattisgarh will be closely watched as the state is an important political battleground in India.
