    The harsh cold wave persisted in the Kashmir Valley, with Pahalgam experiencing a frigid low of minus 6.6°C on Wednesday. The plains of Jammu faced challenges as moderate fog hampered visibility, causing difficulties for commuters, according to a meteorological department official.

    Srinagar registered a low of minus 4.8°C, consistent with the previous night, marking a deviation of 2.7°C below the seasonal norm for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir at this time of the year. Qazigund reported a minimum temperature of minus 4.6°C, slightly lower than the previous night, with a deviation of 1.8°C below the normal for the gateway town.

    Pahalgam recorded a low of minus 6.6°C, maintaining normalcy for the renowned resort in south Kashmir. Kokernag in south Kashmir saw a minimum temperature of minus 3.2°C, slightly above the previous night and 0.3°C above normal for the location.

    In north Kashmir, Kupwara town experienced a low of minus 5.3°C, indicating a deviation of 2.8°C below normal. Gulmarg, the world-famous skiing resort in north Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 3.8°C, showing a temperature 3.2°C above normal.

    Jammu witnessed a minimum temperature of 7.0°C, a slight dip from the previous night, and below normal by 0.3°C for the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir. Banihal reported a low of 1.6°C, Batote 2.6°C, and Bhaderwah 0.3°C.

    The Kashmir Valley is currently in the midst of ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ a 40-day intense winter period that extends until January 30. This is followed by ‘Chillai-Khurd,’ a 20-day period from January 30 to February 19, and ‘Chillai-Bachha,’ a 10-day period from February 20 to March 1.

    The weather forecast indicates mainly dry conditions until January 3. From January 4-5, there is a possibility of generally cloudy and dry weather over plains, with “very light” snow expected over isolated extreme higher reaches. January 6-7 is expected to be mainly dry, with no significant weather activity until January 7. On January 8, generally cloudy weather is anticipated with the potential for light rain/snow over isolated higher reaches.
