Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has resigned, and an interim government is set to lead the nation, according to an announcement by Chief of Army Staff General Waqar-uz-Zaman on Monday.
General Waqar stated that a political transition is underway and vowed that justice will be served for all “murders.” He urged the nation to maintain peace and order, calling for an end to the ongoing violence.
“Trust me, let’s work together. Please help maintain peace. We have built a beautiful country together,” said General Waqar, appealing to the public’s sense of unity.
In response to journalists’ questions, General Waqar revealed that he had met with leaders of major political parties, including the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), the Jatiya Party, and Jamaat-e-Islami. Notable figures such as academics Afis Nazrul and Jonayet Saki also attended the meeting.
The Army Chief indicated that further discussions regarding the formation of an interim government would take place at Bangabhaban, the official residence of the President.
Earlier reports by the local newspaper Prothom Alo indicated that Sheikh Hasina had left Dhaka in a military helicopter amid escalating violence across the country. While unconfirmed, there were speculations that she may have fled to India.
Protesters, reacting to news of her departure, stormed her official residence, Ganabhaban, and vandalized the home of Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
The protests, initially triggered by the Anti-Discrimination Students’ Movement demanding Hasina’s resignation, have intensified, leading to widespread unrest and damage.
The Army Chief assured that no countrywide curfew or state of emergency would be necessary as the situation unfolds.
