Bail-Granted to World-Cup Final Pitch-Intruder in Gujarat Court
AHMEDABAD: A court in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, has granted bail to an Australian national arrested for trespassing onto the pitch during the ICC World Cup cricket final, donned in a pro-Palestine T-shirt.The accused, Wen Johnson, had been remanded in police custody for a day by the court a day earlier.
On Tuesday evening, Johnson appeared before the court, and he was released on bail under the condition that he would cooperate with the ongoing investigation and surrender his passport to the court, according to a senior city crime branch official.
During the final match between India and Australia at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Johnson managed to breach security and reach the pitch while Virat Kohli was at bat. Security personnel promptly apprehended him.Johnson faced charges of criminal trespass and causing harm to deter public servants from performing their duties, leading to his arrest by the police.
The city crime branch took over the investigation on Monday, assuming custody of Johnson from the police. They presented him before the Gandhinagar court seeking remand for further inquiry.According to the FIR, Johnson entered the stadium as a regular spectator, jumped the railing, and sprinted toward the pitch, displacing policemen in his attempt to embrace Kohli.
In his statement to the police, Johnson claimed he entered the ground as a devoted fan of Virat Kohli. Notably, he wore a face mask featuring the design of the Palestinian flag and a T-shirt displaying slogans – ‘Stop bombing Palestine’ on the front and ‘Save Palestine’ on the back.Preliminary investigations uncovered that Johnson has a history of similar offenses, having been booked in his home country for invading sports fields in the past.
