Babri Masjid Replica Construction to Begin in Murshidabad Today; Quran Recitation Planned
Two months after the foundation stone was laid, construction of a replica of the Babri Masjid is set to begin on Wednesday in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district.
The project site is located in Beldanga, where preparations were in full swing on Tuesday. Several earthmoving machines were seen at the location, and arrangements were being made for a Quran recitation ceremony scheduled to precede the formal start of construction.
The foundation stone for the structure was laid on December 6 last year by Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir. On Monday, Kabir shared the design of the proposed mosque on his social media accounts.
According to Kabir, around 1,200 people are expected to participate in a Quran recitation beginning at 10 am on Wednesday, following which construction work will formally commence.
Speaking to NDTV, Kabir said, “On Wednesday, the construction of Babri Masjid will begin with the recitation of Quran from 10 am.”
Kabir, who has since formed his own political outfit — the Janata Unnayan Party — was suspended by the Trinamool Congress after announcing his plan to build the ‘Babri Masjid’ replica in Murshidabad. He has recently made critical remarks about Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, stating that she “will not become the Chief Minister and will not be sworn in.”
The development has triggered political reactions beyond West Bengal. On Tuesday, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath asserted that the Babri structure would never be rebuilt.

Addressing a public event in Barabanki near Ayodhya, Adityanath said: “‘Ram Lalla, hum aayenge, mandir wahi banaayenge’ — we had said we would build the temple there. Has the temple been built? Is there any doubt?”
He further remarked, “The day of ‘Qayamat’ (doomsday) will never come and hence the Babri structure will never be rebuilt. Those dreaming of that day will rot away; that day will never come.”
Responding to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister’s comments, Kabir said, “Let Yogi-ji say whatever he wants. If he wants to stop Babri construction, he needs to come here. We will see once he reaches Murshidabad.” He alleged that the remarks were politically motivated and added, “We did not oppose the construction of the Ram Mandir. Why are they opposing this?”
Meanwhile, a right-wing group has reportedly called upon people in Uttar Pradesh to march towards Murshidabad in protest.
Kabir has also announced a three-day march titled the “Babri Yatra,” scheduled to begin on Thursday. The march will proceed from Palashi in Murshidabad to Itahar in Dinajpur.
“I have named it ‘Babri Yatra’. I want to send a message to those who are opposing Babri. That is why I am undertaking this yatra,” he told reporters.
The situation is being closely watched given the sensitivities surrounding the issue and the sharp political reactions it has generated.
