Azad Challenges NC Leaders to Break Away from Sheikh Abdullah’s Legacy
DPAP chairman Ghulam Nabi Azad has challenged NC president Dr. Farooq Abdullah and his son, Omar Abdullah, to move beyond the shadow of former chief minister Sheikh Abdullah. Azad took aim at Omar Abdullah, reminding him of the support his MLAs provided during his six-year tenure as chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 2009 to 2015.
Azad, a former Congress leader, criticized the NC for a history marred by violence, unfulfilled promises, and exploiting the people. He emphasized that Omar Abdullah’s term as chief minister was possible due to the support from his MLAs, who continue to stand by Azad.

Responding to recent comments by Omar Abdullah about his MLAs’ role, Azad criticized Abdullah for showing a “lack of gratitude,” suggesting it reflects his character. Azad is currently campaigning in Ramban district for his party’s candidate, G M Saroori, who is contesting against BJP’s Dr. Jitendra Singh and Congress’s Choudhary Lal Singh in the Udhampur Lok Sabha constituency. The election is set for April 19.
Highlighting his own contributions, Azad recalled his efforts in bringing Farooq Abdullah back to Jammu and Kashmir during a tumultuous period. “When Farooq Abdullah left due to militancy, I played a key role in his return. Despite my respect for Farooq Abdullah, his son lacks political maturity,” Azad remarked.
He further urged the NC to evolve beyond Sheikh Abdullah’s legacy, questioning their resilience in facing challenges like their predecessor. “How long will they rely on Sheikh Abdullah’s legacy? They haven’t endured hardships like him and are merely riding on his political legacy,” Azad added.
