Assam CM Announces Ration Card Distribution and Women Empowerment Scheme
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled significant initiatives during a press conference, stating that the state government will distribute ration cards to 42.85 lakh new beneficiaries starting January 16. The total number of ration cards will reach 10,73,479, benefiting 66 lakh households, with distribution undertaken by the Chief Minister and cabinet ministers.
Expressing the government’s vision, Chief Minister Sarma emphasized the inclusion of every ration card holder in the Orunodoi and insurance schemes. Additionally, he introduced the ‘Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan,’ a scheme aimed at financially supporting women self-help groups in rural areas.
Under this scheme, eligible women will receive an initial amount of Rs 10,000 in the first year, followed by Rs 12,500 from the state government in the second year, with an equal loan amount provided by banks. Criteria include restrictions on the number of children for women in general and OBC categories, while specific communities are allowed a maximum number of children.
Highlighting the significance of education, Chief Minister Sarma emphasized that beneficiaries with school-going girl children should ensure their admission to school. The scheme targets 39 lakh women in rural Self Help Groups (SHGs) and 3 lakh women in urban areas, reflecting the government’s commitment to fostering women’s economic empowerment.
The announcements underline the state’s dedication to social welfare and economic development, showcasing a holistic approach towards inclusive growth and empowerment in Assam.
