Arvind Kejriwal to Appear Before Special Court Following ED Arrest
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Thursday, is set to appear before a special court today. The ED team arrived at Kejriwal’s residence for interrogation regarding the liquor policy case, leading to his arrest after he failed to obtain interim protection from the Delhi High Court.
Security Tightened Amidst Political Turmoil
Security was bolstered near the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) office in Delhi following Kejriwal’s arrest, prompting AAP leaders to denounce it as a desperate move by the BJP to stifle opposition voices ahead of elections.
AAP leaders condemned Kejriwal’s arrest as a BJP-led political conspiracy, highlighting it as the first instance of a sitting CM being arrested by the central government. AAP supporters rallied behind Kejriwal, while leaders from other parties extended their support, criticizing the BJP’s use of enforcement agencies against political opponents.
BJP Defends ED Actions
In contrast, BJP leaders supported the ED’s actions, citing allegations of corruption against Kejriwal. They accused the AAP of playing the victim card and emphasized the judiciary’s role in upholding the rule of law.
While the INDIA bloc parties rallied behind Kejriwal, Congress criticized the BJP for what they deemed as vendetta politics. The arrest comes amid a broader crackdown on political figures, including leaders from various parties implicated in the excise policy case.
Legal and Political Fallout
The arrest of Kejriwal adds to the political turmoil, with AAP leaders challenging the move through legal means while accusing the BJP of misusing investigative agencies for political gain. The case underscores the tensions between the ruling party and the opposition, fueling debates over democratic norms and judicial independence.
