Arvind Kejriwal Challenges ED Summons in Delhi High Court
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has approached the Delhi High Court to challenge the Enforcement Directorate’s summons in a money laundering case related to the excise policy. The petition, filed by the AAP national convenor, is scheduled for a hearing on Wednesday before a bench comprising Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Manoj Jain.
Refusal to Appear
Kejriwal has consistently refused to comply with the ED’s summonses, denouncing them as unlawful. The latest summons, the ninth issued by the agency, calls for his appearance on March 21 under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
Background of the Case
The case revolves around alleged corruption in the formulation and implementation of Delhi’s excise policy for 2021-22, which was subsequently annulled. The CBI initiated an FIR based on a recommendation by Lt Governor VK Saxena, leading to a money laundering probe.
Allegations and Charge Sheets
Authorities assert that irregularities occurred during the modification of the excise policy, with undue benefits granted to license holders. AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh are currently in judicial custody in connection with the case. Kejriwal’s name has appeared multiple times in the ED’s charge sheets, alleging collusion with accused parties to tailor the excise policy in exchange for kickbacks to the Aam Aadmi Party.
Legal Proceedings
Despite being granted bail by a Delhi court on two complaints filed by the ED for missing prior summonses, Kejriwal’s legal battle persists as he contests the legitimacy of the latest summons in the ongoing money laundering investigation.
