ANC Suspends Former President Jacob Zuma Amid Party Disunity
In a move highlighting internal divisions within South Africa’s ruling African National Congress (ANC), the party suspended the country’s former president, Jacob Zuma, on Monday. ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula emphasized that individuals, including Zuma, whose conduct conflicts with the party’s values, will be excluded from the ANC. This decision sets the stage for legal challenges against a rival group supporting Zuma.
Disunity Ahead of General Election
The suspension of Zuma is anticipated to contribute to disunity within the ANC as the country approaches the general election later this year. The ANC, traditionally dominant in South African politics, is facing challenges that may lead to a decline in its influence.
Zuma’s Political Shift and Potential Legal Actions
Jacob Zuma, the fourth president of democratic South Africa, left office in 2018 amid corruption allegations. In December, he announced his involvement with a new party named uMkhonto We Sizwe (MK), reflecting a shift away from the ANC. The ANC is considering legal actions, including filing a complaint with the electoral court to deregister the new party and launching a trademark challenge to reclaim the name. ANC Secretary General Mbalula highlighted the deliberate nature of forming the MK party, asserting that it seeks to exploit the historical significance of the ANC’s former armed wing during the anti-apartheid struggle for a counter-revolutionary agenda.
