Anantnag district wins national award for fish and fisheries development on World Fisheries Day
The Department of Fisheries received national acclaim and praise for its remarkable development of fish and fisheries in Jammu and Kashmir, topping the list of best performing districts among all Union Territories of the Country.
Anantnag district, which achieved this exceptional feat, was awarded a trophy and a certificate of merit. The award ceremony was held on the occasion of World Fisheries Day, which was celebrated at the national level in Gujarat Science City,Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
The event was inaugurated and chaired by Purshotam Rupala, Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying. The function was attended by eminent members of the fisheries fraternity from both national and international levels. The Union Minister lauded and acknowledged the efforts of the department for developing Fisheries, especially Cold water, in the UT of J&K.

He highlighted that the Government of India has launched various schemes for promoting fish marketing, branding and export under PMMSY. He urged the youth to avail the benefits of such schemes for developing market linkages through cold chain and getting lucrative prices for their produce. It is noteworthy that the Kashmir region of J&K is the hub for the development of Cold water Fisheries and under the leadership of Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha and guidance of Principal Secretary, Agriculture Production Department, Shailendra Kumar, the UT government is taking various measures to boost the productivity and income of Fishers.
A special subsidy component has been allocated for the UT to encourage more farmers to adopt this profitable venture. Director Fisheries, Mohammad Farooq Dar, said that the department is focused on making farmers more prosperous through implementing various schemes for marketing and exporting trout to other States.
Anantnag is the leader in Trout Production and a centre of Trout production among all the districts of the country. Moreover, the district is crossed by different trout streams that attract esteemed anglers from both local and foreign origins, thus enhancing the ecotourism.
The department aims to double the trout production in the next five years through effective implementation of the schemes like PMMSY, HADP, FIDF etc, creating fruitful employment opportunities for educated unemployed youth. The World Fisheries Day 2023 was celebrated in all the districts of J&K and the main event was held at Regional Fish Farmers Development Agency of Jammu Division and Kashmir Division.
A large number of fishers participated in the event and watched the live streaming of the World Fisheries Day event held at Gujarat Science City, Ahmedabad Gujarat.
