Amid Middle East Crisis, Fuel Prices Could Rise: RBI Governer Sanjay Malhotra

NEW DELHI, May 14, 2026 [VoM News]: In case the Middle East crisis continues, the government may eventually need to raise diesel and petrol prices, RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra said.

While attending a conference in Switzerland, he stated that India imports oil, gas, and fertilisers, and the supply chain has been affected due to ongoing regional tensions. He said these disruptions could make the country more vulnerable to economic shocks.

Malhotra added that, so far, the government has avoided any such move, but if the crisis persists, the hike could be reflected in retail fuel prices.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already issued a message urging people to reduce fuel consumption and cut reliance on imported edible oils.

The Indian rupee has also faced immense pressure, reflecting its impact on a large scale.
