In a surprising turn of events, Afghanistan achieved a stunning 69-run victory over the defending champions, England, in their World Cup match. Sent in to bat first, Afghanistan managed to put up a total of 284 runs, and then returned to dismiss England for 215, causing one of the most significant upsets in World Cup history.
Afghanistan’s Impressive Batting Performance
Rahmanullah Gurbaz emerged as the top-scorer for Afghanistan with a brisk 57-ball 80, while his opening partner, Ibrahim Zadran, contributed 28 runs, forming a solid first-wicket partnership of 114 runs in 16 overs. Following their early success, Ikram Alikhil made a valuable contribution with 58 runs off 66 balls, and star leg-spinner Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman added 23 and 28 runs, respectively. England’s Spirited Fight
In response, England’s Harry Brook put up a fight with a 61-ball 66, keeping England’s hopes alive. However, they eventually succumbed to the disciplined effort of the Afghan bowlers, led by Rashid Khan (3/37) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (3/51). Additional support came from Mohammad Nabi (2/16), Fazalhaq Farooqi (1/50), and Naveen-ul-Haq (1/44).
