Adani’s Mundra Port Sets New Record with 16.1 Million Tonnes of Cargo in October

In an impressive feat, Adani Group’s flagship Mundra Port achieved a historic milestone by handling 16.1 million tonnes of cargo in October, marking the highest volume ever recorded by an Indian port. Mundra Port is already the largest port in India, having managed 102 million metric tonnes (MMT) of cargo this year, reflecting a substantial year-on-year growth of 9%. The port reached the 100 MMT mark in just 210 days, surpassing its previous record of 231 days from last year.

Double-Digit Growth Across Categories

Mundra Port’s success is not limited to volume alone. The port experienced double-digit year-on-year growth in container handling, as well as liquids and gas. It set another remarkable record by handling 4.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers in only 203 days, an achievement that took 225 days in the previous financial year. Furthermore, the port expanded its portfolio to include new cargo types, such as Hydrolysis Pi Gas (HPG). In 2023, the port accommodated more than 2,480 ships and serviced over 11,500 rakes.

Strategic Location and Infrastructure

Mundra Port’s strategic location and top-notch infrastructure make it a formidable player in the shipping industry. The port’s ability to maintain a deep draft positions it to handle large vessels efficiently. This was evident in July 2023 when Mundra Port berthed one of the largest ships ever, MV MSC Hamburg, measuring 399 meters in length and 54 meters in width, with a carrying capacity of 15,908 TEUs. In 2021, the port welcomed the 13,892 TEU APL Raffles, the largest container vessel to dock at any Indian port. Mudra Port also enjoys strong connectivity with the hinterland, particularly the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC).

Ambitious Targets for the Future

With its remarkable cargo volume growth rate, Mundra Port has set its sights on a goal of reaching 200 MMT in the fiscal year 2025, signifying its commitment to continued growth and expansion in the years to come.
