The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Thursday apprehended Mohammad Ayoub Hajam, a Patwari from Halqa Fatehpora in District Anantnag, for demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 5,000.
The arrest followed a complaint lodged by a resident who alleged that the Patwari demanded Rs 9,000 as a bribe to issue a certified copy of an online land mutation related to property purchased by the complainant’s wife in February of this year.
After negotiations, the bribe amount was reduced to Rs 5,000.
Rather than succumbing to the demand, the complainant chose to report the matter to the Anti-Corruption Bureau, seeking legal action against the accused.
The ACB conducted a discreet verification of the complaint, which confirmed the Patwari’s demand for the bribe. Consequently, a case was registered under FIR number 04/2024 under section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, at the ACB Police Station in Anantnag, and an investigation was initiated.
During the investigation, the ACB formed a trap team that successfully caught Mohammad Ayoub Hajam red-handed while he was accepting the Rs 5,000 bribe from the complainant.
The ACB team arrested him on the spot, and the bribe money was recovered from his possession in the presence of independent witnesses.
The investigation into the case is ongoing as the ACB continues its efforts to combat corruption in the region.
