AB PM-JAY Marks Landmark with 30 Crore Ayushman Cards, Offering Rs. 5 Lakh Health Cover to Indian Families
Indian government announced a significant achievement for the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri – Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY), revealing that the program has issued over 30 crore Ayushman cards. Administered by the National Health Authority (NHA), this flagship initiative aims to provide an annual health cover of Rs. 5 lakhs per family for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization to 12 crore beneficiary families.
The creation of Ayushman cards represents a crucial aspect of the AB PM-JAY, and dedicated efforts have been ongoing to ensure that every beneficiary is equipped with one. The persistent endeavors have led to the remarkable milestone of 30 crore Ayushman cards, with over 16.7 crore cards crafted in just the last two fiscal years.
Notably, over 7.5 crore Ayushman cards have been generated during the current financial year (2023-24), translating to an average of approximately 181 cards created every minute. Ayushman card creation has been integrated into the on-spot services offered during the Viksit Bharat Sankalp Yatra initiated on November 15, 2023, with the goal of saturating various schemes of the Indian government. This campaign has significantly expedited card creation at the grassroots level, generating more than 2.43 crore Ayushman cards during the yatra alone.
Moreover, the Ayushman Bhava campaign, launched by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on September 17, 2023, has contributed to the creation of over 5.6 crore Ayushman cards. The introduction of the ‘Ayushman App’ by the NHA, featuring a unique self-verification feature, has further facilitated card creation. Since its launch on September 13, 2023, the app has been downloaded over 52 lakh times, showcasing its widespread success.
Uttar Pradesh leads the states with the highest number of Ayushman cards, boasting 4.83 crore cards. Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra follow closely, holding the second and third positions with 3.78 crore and 2.39 crore Ayushman cards, respectively. Eleven states have surpassed the 1 crore Ayushman card mark.
Gender parity is a key focus of the AB PM-JAY, with approximately 14.6 crore Ayushman cards created for females. The program has issued cards to female beneficiaries in 49 percent of cases, and 48 percent of treatments provided under the scheme have been availed by females, emphasizing gender equity as an integral part of its design.
The Ayushman Card has evolved into a symbol of equity, entitlement, and empowerment. It assures impoverished families protection against the dual challenges of disease and the financial burden of treatment. The government remains committed to ensuring that all eligible beneficiaries possess an Ayushman Card. Notably, AB PM-JAY has facilitated 6.2 crore hospital admissions, amounting to more than Rs. 79,157 crore. This has resulted in significant savings, as the cost of treatment outside the AB PM-JAY framework would have been nearly twice as high, saving over 1.25 lakh crore in out-of-pocket expenditure for underprivileged families.
